COUNTERPOINT
– from medieval Latin *contrapunctum*, literally “punctum contra punctum” (point for point). A technique in musical composition, in which the music consists of strong voices playing with each other. One theme, or motif, may be contrapuntal to another. The sculptures are contrapuntal to the sculpted amphi stairs.
Counterpoint can also metaphorically refer to different people who are gathered in the same place, who interact with each other in different ways, or perform in parallel in the same space. As at Skeisvang High School, where students with different fields of interest such as physical expression; dance, drama and music meet the general subjects, which in society are seen as more “useful”. What is often forgotten in the discussion about which subjects should be prioritized is that people need to develop both sides, both the rational/analytical and the impulsive/creative. One without the other means that one does not develop into a holistic and formed person in body and mind.
